What does Catholic Church teach about murder? (I'm atheist, please no silly atheist replies, it's schoolwork)?

Doing an assignment for religion and need to know what the Catholic Church teach about murder, if you've got respectable sources that would be brilliant, if not, any information would be useful.

Murder is one of the mortal sins, which means that it carries with it the threat of eternal damnation unless the sinner receives the sacrament of confession and is forgiven through perfect contrition. If you read the catechism, you'll find there's a section that reads, "Immediately after death the souls of those who die in a state of mortal sin descend into hell." You can find the Catechism online. Specifically the section that deals with the fifth commandment, "Thou shalt not kill," can be found here: http://www.christusrex.org/www1/CDHN/fifth.html

Properly translated from the original Hebrew, the phrase is: You shall not murder. Look at a Jewish version of the Ten Commandments: http://www.hebrew4christians.com/Scripture/Torah/T...

The commandment "You shall not kill" forbids direct and intentional killing as gravely sinful. The murderer and those who cooperate voluntarily in murder commit a sin that cries out to heaven for vengeance. (Gen 4:10)

Killing in self defense, a just war, and lawful capital punishment are not considered murder.

However many Christians including Catholics believe most modern governments no longer need to use capital punishment to protect society from criminals.

For more information, see the Catechism of the Catholic Church, sections 2258 and following: http://www.usccb.org/catechism/text/pt3sect2chpt2a...

The Catholic Church is against murder (including abortion and euthanasia). Suicide is considered murder.

The Church gives its members the option of being in favor of or opposing certain wars. Catholics are also permitted to either oppose or support the death penalty when carried out in a way acceptable to the Church.

Killing in a just war is not considered sinful. Those soldiers who give their lives in service during a just war can be considered martyrs if they die in a state of sanctifying grace.

The Catholic Church is opposed to abortion, contraception, embryonic stem cell research, assisted suicide, removing the brain dead from feeding tubes, and murder.

You are probably excpeted to say something about the ten commandments and mentions some of the key issuses like abortion, euphasia ,stem cell reaserach and captial punishment

Just go to some pro-life website and copy some of the bull crap to the site.

Of course its just what the catholic church thinks so you probably wont get any marks if you write anything that is pro-chocie or support stem cell research.

    EDIT

this is why I hate RE, all they expect you to do is repeat the crap the church belives, No argument or debate should be made in your assigment.
