What can you tell me about the Isle of Wight?
All I am hearing about this little place is that it is crap because there is nothing to do. There must be things to do, even if there is no night life. What is the scenery like? Is it pretty there? Is it a bit like the channel islands?
Oh yeah sorry. Meant to say, it is Bonchurch on the south east coast we are going to.
Thanks Platinum. That is more positive feedback. We are going there for a week on honeymoon, because of the special and unique accommodation we found to rent there. We really want a quiet week, with just the two of us, away from it all, but obviously would like to take walks and visit places as well. I presume the prisons the others spoke of are historical, if you weren't joking. We won't be going for take aways anyway. We will go between self catering and eating out in restaurants.
Thanks The Tank. It is great to get recommendations of pubs and restaurants. We are both fairly quiet...well not party animals anyway. It is August we will be there.

The Isle of Wight is not a land of nightclubs and lager louts. It is not really a holiday island in the way that you would think of places like Jersey or the Canaries. It is a working island that happens to have some seaside towns with beaches, piers, mini-golf and hotels.
The interior of the island is very attractive but it is mostly farmland, although there are some inland tourist attractions such as Robin Hill.
The south western coast is famous for being a dinosaur coast and many famous fossils are discovered there.
Some of the best pubs in the UK exist on the IoW. One of the best of these is the Buddle at St Catherine's. This is an old smugglers inn and serves fantastic food and real ale.
Osborne House is Queen Victoria's county house and open to the public (English Heritage). There are several Roman sites too.
Take a four day break using Shanklin or Ryde as a base. Use a good guide (as published on the IoW web site) and keep an open mind. You'll have a great time. Remember that most tourist attractions have seasonal opening times and so aren't available all year..
Remember, if Jonathan Ross doesn't like it and can only be rude about the place, you can have a pretty good idea if it is going to be ok for you. Are you an motor-mouth, uncouth smart-alek like Ross or not? That should help you make your mind up.
Source(s): I live in Hampshire and visit regularly for lunch at the Buddle and sometimes at the Yelfs Hotel in Ryde. - PlatinumLv 51 decade ago
Yes, I thought that too. But then we visited there a couple of summers ago and it's quite pretty, if a touch 1970s in parts. We stayed on the south-west coast, near Brighstone, and the views along the coast are beautiful. There are plenty of pretty towns to wander around in; Osborne House, Queen Victoria's retreat, is there, as are Carisbrooke Castle, Blackgang Chine and the Needles. If you want a nice, quiet holiday in a relatively unspoilt chunk of English countryside with easy access to the sea and plenty of places to visit within easy reach, then go for it.

my boyfriend and I went out of season for a long weekend about 3 years back ... I thought it was going to be touristy but it wasn't at all ... we had a fabulous B+B that did the best breakfast I've ever had anywhere ... the weather wasn't too good but as I said, we were out of season ... we stayed in the south east of the island, near Ventnor, and the scenery was lovely, very hilly ... I thoroughly enjoyed it, even if it was a bit of a time warp (the comment about 1970's is a good one) ... you'll definitely feel "away from it all", whatever IT is ... have a great honeymoon
congratulations in advance on your wedding
