What kind of information is erased when formatting a disk?

I have my phone connected to my laptop via usb, and it shows up on the screen as removable disk F. In order for me to open it, it says I have to format the disk which therefore erases all the data. What kind of data is it erasing? phonebook, pics, texts???

Update:

I have a Samsung blast, and also a micro sandisk memory card...So in this case will it delete all that's on the memory card only or everything stored on the phone itself (not including the memory card)?

It erases EVERYTHING that is on the "removable disk F"

If your contacts are stored on that, they will be gone. If your pictures are stored on that they will be gone. If your texts are on that they will be gone.

It erases everything, and it erases them permanently.

But the real question is where does your phone store its data? A lot of it is on a chip that is not attached, but since I do not know what model your phone is, what your settings are, and if you have a Micro SD card then I can't give you much more info. I would not really recommend formatting unless you have everything backed up.

Formatting erases ALL data. Everything will be cleaned off something that has been formatted. There will be no data left at all. So be careful, make sure you back up what you want before formatting.
