how do i get 16 mo old to sleep on her own?
my baby breastfed until 3weeks ago. up until then, i would nurse her to sleep at night (she's out like a light in 5 minutes). she used to take breastmilk from a bottle, but when the milk turned to formula, she refused to drink it.
my problem now is how to train her to sleep on her own. i'm 8weeks along in my second pregnancy and pretty soon, i won't be able to rock her to sleep. she wants to be rocked to sleep while i'm standing up! if i dare sit down, she'd howl my head off. i've been rocking her while sitting down because i really couldn't sustain long periods of standing. it's been a week and i thought she'd get "used to it." but she's not. and i hate it that she goes to sleep crying.
btw, a teddy bear while lying down worked once. took an hour of tossing and turning and squishing /kissing the bear, passing the bear back and forth with me-- before she finally closed her eyes to sleep.
any other suggestions out there?

A consistent bed time routine helps, ie. warm bath, cup of warm milk- have you tried warm full cream cows milk (after 12 mo. they don't need formula), maybe in a special sippy cup, a story and a cuddle. If it is cold pre warm the bed room.
I have found the book "the baby sleep book" by Sears and Sears quite helpful.
Also I am presuming you have a partner, is it possible they can take over the bed time routine as they probably will have to have to do it more frequently once the new baby is here?
I personally would be careful about giving her honey, foods like that prior to bed can be very harmful to little teeth- especially if they are not brushed after eating the honey.
Good luck !

Just because he's screaming doesn't mean it's hurting him. He is screaming because you are giving in - he knows how to work you. All kids go through this, and it's truly amazing what kids will do to get their way. My son did this and even threw up a few times. He got over it. Screaming and throwing up isn't hurting anyone. He's screaming because he knows you'll eventually give in and bring him to bed. Be assertive and calm and reassuring, but don't give in or he wins and you're only making it worse by giving in. Start going in there every 10 minutes to lie him back down and kiss him and walk back out. Then 15 minutes, then 20 minutes, etc. He has to learn this eventually. Better to get it over with now than later. Just put on your patience hat and get it over with. It will take a few days but it's so worth it in the long run. Good luck!

I'm having the same problem with my 17 month old, so I can't really help you.... but I just wanted to comment on the honey suggestion, kids are supposed to be at least 3 before you give them honey. "honey should not be given to babies in any form (including raw, cooked or baked into products). Honey is bad for babies because it can grow botulinum spores, which can secrete a toxin and produce a transient paralysis in babies" -pregnancyandbabies.com :)

well i have a 13 mo baby boy... he has been sleep on his own since he was 7 mo.... you have to just let her cry .... you know her cries by now... if you hear a cry of stress the you should check on her.... if you do this she will learn to comfort herself when it is bed time...
My son take a nap at noon... and goes to bed around 7 pm... and wakes up around 630 am... he know when it is bed time ..he still cries but not for long...soon he is out..

You should try to keep her more awake during the day time that way she'll be somewhat exhausted when it's time to go to sleep at night.
also try giving her a spoonful of honey (not maple syrup) this will probably take her 1 hour to relax and go to bed so give it to her an hour before so her body can be prepared to go to bed on time and that way it will become a normal pattern

Sounds like you need tough love let her cry, you will know her crys if its just a tired cry leave her only go in if she is distressed or overly worked up. Have you tried playing soft music in her room while she goes to sleep

We bought a matress for next to her bed and sleep there until she falls asleep when we bugger off.
