wisdom teeth dry sockets!?

I had my wisdom teeth removed a week ago and had two dry sockets filled today. He put a gross-tasting medicated gauze in each side and told me to come back in a week to have them removed. Is this normal?

If you had those painful dry sockets it is....I am sure you feel better already, right? A week sounds right.

Dry sockets develop when a blood clot fails to form or to connect to the bone tissue where the tooth was extracted. The result is an open bone. They put medication into the socket so that the bone would not infect (dry socket is a fast track to osteomyelitis). What you bank on now is that healthy gum tissue from around the extraction site will slowly cover the complete socket. In general, a DS takes two to four weeks to heal sufficiently to stop applying topic medication, and two to six months on top of that to close completely.

I have never heard of treating a dry socket so easily. You were lucky that you were able to get relief. I was in severe pain for about 2 weeks. If that gauze stays in the socket for a week, it would seem it could cause infection, but do what your dentist tells you. I've just not heard of it. When I had gauze put in, he told me to take it out in a couple of hours, check for bleeding, and if there was some, put the gauze in for another hour or so. He specifically said to take the gauze out. If you have no pain, you're in good shape I guess.

It happens a lot. Especially if you suck your teeth a lot or tongue the sores a lot. It will be okay and will heal fine. Good luck! I hope you are taking advantage of the vicodin.

when you get dry spots people can often get food stuck in there

and its good he put stuff in them and also an infection can happen

so it is normal and good :))

    YES, THIS IS NORMAL

BECAUSE DRY SOCKETS TAKE LONG TO HEAL, FREQUENT REGULAR VISITS ARE NEEDED.
