Can I convert a 420a to a 4g63 in a 97 Eclipse GS N/T?

I have a 1997 Eclipse GS non turbo with a 420a. Would I need to get the computer and all the wiring?Ho would I change it?

You need the motor, the transmission, the wiring harness, the ECU, the axles, and some awesome fabrication skills.

To my knowledge, less than 5 people have ever converted the 420a over to the 4g63. Everyone talks about doing it, but you know what ends up happening? They pull the 420a out, and then can't figure out how to put the 4g63 in, so the car just sits and gets forgotten, or sold, or towed away.

Honestly, to do this swap costs roughly the same amount as a new GST or GSX. So as much as I hate to say it, you're better off buying one of those, OR buying a turbo kit for the 420a and building that up. There are plenty of fast cars out there with the Hahn kit, and they still only pay non-turbo DSM insurance.

So the short answer is No. Turbocharge the 420a instead and save yourself a lot of hassle and money.

There was a guy who did do the swap but he got his axles misaligned and shredded his transmission.

Anything is possible but you would spend too much money doing it. It is a complicated swap and not as interchangeable like the honda swaps. The motor mounts do not line up, many of the parts are on opposite sides of each other, ecu, timing belt, even transmission if i remember correctly. Doing this swap is as of much difficulty as swapping any other engine, rx7, etc into your car (a lot of custom work).

4g63 eclipses are going for pretty cheap now. I would recommend you trade it in instead.

It would be better off to get a whole front clip of a eclipse gst. This swap is possible but very very very costly. This is just no drop in and go thing like the sr20s. You need almost everything and maybe a new transmission as well. It also requires custom fabrications or welding.

i used to have the 420a eclipse 98, and i just wrecked it cuz i built the 420a with turbo and made it too fast. you can do the swap with a lotta money perhaps a front clip. either sell and buy a gst or gsx, or invest in the 420a is my suggestion

and to the guy below, of course he needs a new tranny, cuz the 420a is a mopar chrystler engine and tranny, and the 4g63 is mitsubishi.

AND HEY, I FOUND YOU A FULLY BUILT TURBO READY 420A ENGINE RIGHT HERE, with this built 420a, you can push 400hp! You do need to get a new timing belt cover for this one though..
