Two computers want two IP addresses?

I have two computers in the house one desktop and one laptop. They are currently on a router system and using the same IP address. Im wondering if there is any way of having a differernt IP for each system due to fact they can not be on some sites at the same time. Cable company said something about having a switch box and they could assign two IP's. Can anyone tell me if this is correct and what type of box I should use?

Update:

No the cable goes into the cable modem then that is running into my router with direct connection on the desktop computer and wireless for laptop. However site sees that same ip address is already on.

Basically all of the mainstream consumer routers out there dynamically assign IP addresses to computers, meaning no two computers on the same network should have the same IP address. Are you sure your computers are behind a router and not just the cable modem?

No, should not need a switch to change the local IP address of a computer. You can just go into the network connections page, right click on your internet connections and just click repair connection. This will make it fetch a new IP address from the router. If it the same again. Then you need to change the settings of your wireless router to set a dynamic IP address to each system when it connection. Now repair the connection again and you should now have two different IP addresses.

so a strategies as i comprehend and have rather tried this on a community. In homestead windows Xp , you could assign 2 IP address to a minimum of one community card. to characteristic 2d IP address goto TCP/IP properties of your community adapter and then in progressed you could upload IPs. I had come throughout the time of a concern as quickly as I had to alter IP address on 5 workstation gaining access to information superhighway and speaking to the server X for accounting utility.an identical server X working the accounting utility for different workstation working community video games(distinctive IP selection).on the grounds that the two set of workstation's have been bodily on an identical community, I had assigned one IP from the hot selection to the server X.that's like one actual community with 2 logical community and the server X can refer to machines in the two networks.

If you have a router, it should be assigning separate internal IP Addresses.
