How do you get your Boss to realize you have a brain?

I'm an executive assistant to a really great man problem is 85% of my day is sitting around waiting for him to need me to do something for him. He give me little projects like printing 100 page articles off the internet and creating binders, or going into his emails and sending people information. He never gives me anything that requires a brain. I don't understand - he has told me many times how smart he thinks I am but why can't he give me something intelligent to do? The whole point of my being his assistant is to help him with his work. Not sit all day doing nothing or do work that anybody graduating the 5th grade can do. He's such a nice guy but it's driving me to the point of possibly leaving and seeking a more challenging position. If I go to him - no matter what I say he will say it's going to take time to learn the business and I have to be patient - I've been there 2 yrs.

Since you have been for 2 years, he could have delegated some more practical work to you. May be he wants to develop more trust on you . But if you come across to any challenging positions, you can go ahead. I don't think he can stop you.

I know this is not what you want to hear but I think you should put your brain to use by thinking of something that needs doing and then do it. Show initiative. If you have been there long enough to know the business then you should be able to see what you could help with. What kind of internet articles does he need? That could give you a clue of something he needs researched. What does he complain about not having enough time for? Or is he one of those execs who just tries to LOOK busy?

Fine, what did you think you would be doing working for him? What exactly do you think you could do and then present that to him. He may be waiting for you to make the first move with ideas to show how giving you more responsibility would help the company. What could you be doing with your intelligence to help? Ask for a meeting with him and show him what you have been doing compared to what you want to do and see if he will be supportive.

-You get a job with a Boss that has One of His Own ! :) Your Options are THESE; Learn to LIVE with what you've GOT, - or roll the "Dice" & look for something Better... Times being what they ARE, I wouldn't Gamble with my Future... -You're too easy to "Replace..."
