Crazy instrument in the Cake video "The Distance"...?

It's like an electronic clarinet or something. It kind of looks like a toy. What is it?

The instrument you are seeing in the video is called a Melodica. Robby is right though -- what we are hearing is not the actual sound of the Melodica. The background line that “looks” like it’s coming from the Melodica is actually created by a synthesizer.

You can find out more about Melodicas here: http://www.hohnerusa.com/index.php?344

    Also, here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melodica

It’s a pretty cool instrument. If you want to hear what it actually sounds like, here is a highly entertaining video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rbPYmGq74eI

The instrument is a mouth harp. It's a harmonica that you blow into and play with keys, like a keyboard. The sound that your actually hearing is a synth of some type.e.g.(moog,arp,roland,korg,yamaha)!

Just guessing,I would say the synth is playing a sine wave with a little vibrato, portamento(glide) and envelope set to hold the note as long as the key is held down, like an organ.e.g.hammond B-3.

Source(s): I'm 50 and have been playing keyboards and synth's all my life. It's ingrained!I actually did this song with a band and I used a micro-moog to duplicate the sound!

It's not a real instrument. It was added in post-production. Pretty convincing, huh?
