Why don't brothers and sisters look more alike...?

since the DNA that forms them is exactly the same; same DNA from the mother, same DNA from the father?

The DNA that forms them is NOT exactly the same. A child recieves half of its father's genetic material, and half of it's mothers. WHICH half of each, however, is pretty much random.

This is explained clearly by Mendel's Laws of Inheritence. A child recieves ONE copy of each gene from each parent (the Law of Segregation). However, each parent has TWO copies of that gene. Which copy the offspring receives is completely random (the Law of Independent Assortment).

Later genetic research found that the Law of Independent Assortment does not always hold and that some genes are linked, but since this only applies to genes on the same chromosome that are relatively close to one another, the "law" still applies as a general rule of thumb.

    Hope this helps!

Brothers and sisters often look similar but only twins have identical DNA. Each parent donates half of the DNA (similar to half of each DNA helical ladder). However, the parents half-ladders do not join identically with each child and each mix is unique in a child's final DNA. However, all siblings will have identical mitochrondial DNA received from the mother's egg and not the male sperm. This has been used to help trace separated family members.

Only a portion of the DNA will be the same from one sibling to another, assuming they were conceived and born at different times. There will be genetic variations from one sibling to the next.

The exception is identical twins, who actually do have the same DNA because they were conceived in exactly the same event.

you need to understand about genetics and alleles. basically, there are many versions af a gene (brown eyes, blue eyes, green eyes etc.) and your parents carry different versions so when your DNA is formed, there is a multitude of possible outcomes. Ever heard of a punnet square?

It is not the same. If you get two genes, one from mom the other from dad. Then it goes to say they got two genes also, one from each of their parents.

    .

    x1 &y1

    x1 & y2

    x2 & y1

    x2 & y2

remember, also one gene will become dominant, so in my example genes listed it means either the first row or the second row can become dominant. therefore, we are really looking at 8 unique possibilities.

also the current environment has a direct influence on genetics

It is not as simple as you're thinking...trust me.

    All children look somewhat different.

It's a way to tell them apart.
