Comparing the Flood of 1927 in New Orleans and Hurricane Katrina? What is 2 other natural disasters to compare?

I am just trying to figure out some natural disasters that I could compare. Comparing them socially would work like the flood and Katrina I just can't think of other disasters that would have this type of correlation like these two. Any help would be great!

Update:

They don't need to be the same type of disaster.

Update 2:

Also, social issues within the two would be good. Like Katrina and the poor and race is a major part of these two disasters.

I can't remember the dates, but there was a devastating Hurricane that hit South Fla back in .... maybe the '20s ... I think there was a classic movie based around it (Key West? Key Largo?) ... Compare to Hurricane Andrew. Alternatively, Google up any Big Bad Hurricane from Pre-1930 or so, and compare to a similar one since 1980. The differences due to Satellite Weather and improved communications/coordination should give you plenty to compare. I'd stick to the twentieth century for the old one because there will be better information. Hurricanes are particularly influenced by this change in technology because they can be predicted, and prepared for, to a much greater extent than floods, fires, earthquakes, or volcanoes. (Though Mt. St Helens compared to Vesuvius or some other eruption might be interesting too ...)

In modern Hurricanes, satellites provide info, and radio/television/telephone allow information to reach people and help coordinate relief efforts.

Note on Hurricane Katrina ... cellular telephone made a Huge impact on the post-Katrina rescue and relief. One thing I remember was that the cellular voice bandwidth was jammed, but people were successfully texting information and calls for rescue. (I was in the area 2 days after she hit.)

I stay in tornado alley, too, like CJ. we've had many intense tornados right here, thankfully I even have not individually been in one, and wish to by no ability be. The worst disaster I even have been in became the ice typhoon 2 weeks in the past, whilst our section lost ability, some people for greater suitable than each week, and a variety of of alternative timber and injury to residences. We lost a pair of timber and had roof injury to our porch, and there are nevertheless extensive piles of brush everywhere that is wiped sparkling up and burned, yet we've been fortunate, a lot of people lost so lots greater suitable than that. i'm greatly surprised CJ did no longer point out the ice typhoon that SW Missouri and Springfield suffered las January, we've been there some days later and 40 miles out of Spgfld and each and each of how into and over the city became such devastating injury to the timber that it gave the impact of a conflict zone. i do no longer think of there became a backyard in the finished city that did no longer have timber down or intense tree injury, plus injury to the homes. In the two situations, the finished section became declared a disaster section.
