Car radio quit working after trying to install aftermarket cd player?
I started to install a cd player in my 98 Plymouth Grand Voyager. I had the wiring harness and all that but I hooked the ground wire from the new cd player to the ground wire on the harness, instead of the braided wire that was attached to the oem stereo. I took it out and put the factory radio back in but now, neither the new cd player or the factory radio work. I get nothing when I turn the key to acc but when I turn the radio on, there's a loud pop from the speakers. The front of the radio shows nothing, as if it's getting no power. I checked the fuse and it's fine. other than that, I'm stumped.
After further investigation, a lot of other electrical problems have made themselves known. Now the interior lights won't come on unless the key is in on position. Neither will the wipers, headlights, door locks, or any dash lights. All of which previously worked with the key turned back to acc.
When the key is on, everything works except the radio. Even the dash on the radio buttons work, but the clock and radio itself do nothing. It's obviously getting power, I can hear the speakers pop when I turn it on.
I've checked every fuse and relay I can think of, both under the hood and in the drivers side panel, and they all seem fine.
Tomorrow morning, I'll check to see if either radio is working with a battery.

thats weird, it makes no sense, the ground should be fine on the wiring harness, and it shouldnt have blown a fuse, but with that being said, their is usually another fuse to the radio(not the one in the fuse box), one under the hood, id give it a look if u havent already if that fails, id take the aftermarket radio out test it with the battery, make sure it works, get a test light, track down which wire on the harness isnt working, the accessory power wire, or memory, and when u do that youll know where ur problem lies......

you need to get an installation kit which has small tools, it's really just taking out the old one and installing the new one making sure the wires are correct, but without the installation kit it won't fit correctly into the dash. Find the kit that fits your car, should say on the back which cars the kit will fit. Make sure you don't need to replace any wires.
