Could you tell me what happens at the GYN?

I am about to go to my first gynecologist visit. Could you tell me the procedures step by step?

First they usually weigh you & take your blood pressure. Sometimes they "finger stick" you to test for anemia, and make you give a urine sample to test for pregnancy.

Then you go into the room and put on the paper gown (well, at my dr.'s I just take off my pants & underwear and cover my lower half with a sheet). They usually perform the breast exam first to check for lumps or abnormalities.

After that they perform the pelvic exam, you will be asked to lay back and scoot your butt down to the edge of the table, and put your feet into the stirrups. The dr. will insert the speculum to open your vagina and see your cervix, and then she will insert a long Q-tip type thing (this is the Pap smear). It doesn't hurt as much as you think, it just feels like pressure, not pain. If you are nervous and/or a virgin, ask if they can use the smallest speculum possible. I still use the small one and I've been going to the gyno for almost 10 years.

At that point she takes the speculum out and will put a gloved, lubricated finger inside your vagina while pressing on your stomach with the other hand, to feel your ovaries. Then you are pretty much ready to get dressed and leave!!
