I like Left 4 Dead better... it's more fun and the multiplayer on COD4/5 is more serious (and there are some seriously practised people on there... as there no separate levels for people just starting out it's really difficult to join in). However, the single player of L4D is pretty worthless (I've used it maybe once?) while COD's single player is much better. COD 4/5 is also much more gritty and realistic than L4D. L4D also has minimal maps (4 overall, with 5 levels to each one) which some people find repetitive (although the AI director modifys each map slightly each time you use it so it's never the same thing twice).

I'd say that if you're in for a fun, straightforward multiplayer experience you can dip in and out of I'd go for Left 4 Dead, but if you're in for something more serious and realistic I'd go for COD 4.
