How would a (structural) functionalist perspective view the relationship between sport and the media?

You would have to look for the benefits if you are using functionalist theory.
I would assume that the sports benefit from the media because it offers higher payrolls (from sponsorships), coverage, and it will help the games evolve (instant replay changed college football vastly).
The media can also use sports for ratings. ESPN especially adds bias to their coverage to target certain viewers.
