How can you learn more about god?

I noticed someone said they went to church every week because they wanted to know more about god...now I'm really wondering something...

I ask you, how can you learn more about god when everything there is to know is in the bible?

Surely all you need to do is read the bible a few times to understand everything there is to know?

Update:

Deis Solidat!! I have no idea what question you just answered because you talked all about atheism...I am an atheist myself.

I just honestly wanted to know how people can learn more about god when it's all down in the bible to be read at ones pleasure.

Maybe you should read the question again...

Update 2:

Whilst studying the bible makes sense...would it not make more sense for people to just attend bible study instead of church itself to learn more about it?

I'm not judging, I'm just questioning...to open up more discussion.

I am a Christian that has attended many different churches. some teach directly out of the Bible, some teach more on their interpretation. You are correct, though, going to a bible study allows for back and forth talk. it gives the ability to ask or explain ones understanding. I, personally, started to have a better understanding of God when my life was a mess and I stepped out in faith that maybe there was a God that had a plan. as my life has started to be more focused I want to know more. I am not big on churches. the concept, though, of a group of believers sharing their understanding is a wonderful one.

Reading the bible is a good start, but then you need to ask the Holy Spirit to help you understand fully what you have read. "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom"

Lets use this text as an example. A quick read would suggest that we should be afraid of God to be wise. However, the word "fear" variously translates as fear, awe, reverence.

Note also that it is the beginning of wisdom, what then would be the end I wonder?

"but perfect love drives out fear"

This scripture shows that when we love God completely and know ourselves to be completely loved we will no longer be afraid of anything not even death

"Where O Death is your sting?"

Starting on the path to understanding God requires us to come to God by accepting what Jesus has done on the cross for us, to believe wholeheartedly that God is real and loves us and wants what is best for us. Then we can pray and listen and strengthen and grow our relationship with God. The whole point of Christianity is to bring us into a relationship with the living God.

But it takes understanding of the Bible. One needs to know the language of those times and the context in which the books were written. One needs to go beyond just reading the Bible and study it. Going to church helps in this regard because the pastors (most of them) have done this.

“Just because a few atheists believe that everything came from nothing doesn't mean that all atheists believe that.” Robert Madewell

It’s not a matter of not believing it. It’s a matter of definition. If you say of your Ford Expedition that you have no belief that there was a maker, then you think that nothing made it. It just happened. You have defined yourself as having that mentality.

So if you call yourself an atheist, you are saying that you have no belief in a God—a Creator. Creation just happened. Everything you see—all the different breeds of dog (both male and female), all the different breeds of cat (both male and female), all the different fish in the ocean (both male and female), giraffes, elephants, cattle, sheep, horses, birds, flowers, trees, the sun, the moon, the stars, the four seasons, night and day, the marvels of the human body—the eye with its 137,000,000 light sensitive cells (we have been made well Robert) . . . all these marvels of creation were made by nothing. They all just happened. That’s atheism at its core. What an intellectual embarrassment.

Then the professing atheist has the unbelievable gall to consider himself intelligent, and he thinks that science backs up his delusion. Think of the ludicrous language an atheist is forced to use. He can’t say that creation was “created” and he has to avoid saying that everything has been “made.” He will even say that he has no beliefs . . . that he is “without belief.” His problem is that he hasn’t thought his beliefs through. If he has any intellectual self-respect he will move from the “nothing created everything” belief, to the “something did it but I just don’t know what it was.” And is doing so he distances himself from the embarrassing label of “atheist.”

A great book is that which can be interpreted billions of times in Time and still hold its meaning. And in a Holy book there is a Consciousness attached to that meaning, to each word of it. The Glory of that book is that Cosmic Consciousness. One who understand it in that level of Spiritual Consciousness only realizes the God and understands God. The Rest is simply reading, and for the rest any holy book is simply a book.

Loving is not simply infatuation or adulation. It is expertise and cherishing. Really realizing oneself and having compassion for oneself is the bottom of getting compassion for others. But we would possibly love the species with out accepting what contributors or the species do. Then most effective self-skills can deliver us the boldness to make offerings, and act.

I can't think of a worst way to find your god, then thinking you can simply read one book that proclaims to have all the answers.
