playstation 3 won't read discs? apparently this is a common problem. how to fix?
alright, my ps3 60gb won't read discs anymore.
i'll explain what it does,
i put the disc in and the little icon on the top right appears (loading)
but nothing else happens.
no option to play the game comes up.
it doesn't say that it can't read the disc, it just doesn't.
i can access everything else though.
how do i fix this?
i tried compressed air in the thing, and it was a no go.
i didn't open it up.
my guess is it's the lasor or the disc drive, i don't think it's spinning.
but thenagain, i'm not positive. but i know this is a common problem, so does anybody know the fix?
anybody have the same problem?
it's not under warranty, and no. sony does not have to fix it. sony is not magic, they are just people. it has to be able to be fixed manually.
something replaced, probably. i never did anything to the ps3, i baby'd it.
it just stopped working some random day.

First try this if it does not work try doing my way of fixing it
This is what the PlayStation Forum says:
1. Turn off Playstation®3.
2. Hold the power button down; the system will turn on and turn off once again.
3. Once the System has been shutdown, re-press you finger until you hear 2 consecutive beeps
4. When you hear the 2 beeps take finger off power button.
5. You will be prompted to plug in your controller via USB and then hit the PS button
6. The Recovery menu will pop up.
The current Recovery Menu supports:
• Restart System: Restarts the PLAYSTATION®3 System.
• Restore Default Settings: Reset all system settings back to default.
• Restore File System: Checks for corrupt/missing system files.
• Rebuild Database: Rebuilds the OS for the PLAYSTATION®3.
• Restore PS3 System: Fresh restore; Deletes everything and starts from Scratch.
• System Update: Update the PLAYSTATION®3 System
MY WAY
Sign in
Update your PS3 (in the settings menu the 1st option)
go on the internet browser on the PS3 then go on the menu press triangle then on one of them there are delete cookies and the delete the others as well as cookies
check the disc if it has fingerprints or scratches if it does then thats your problem
if you have the 60GB sos mate they have alot of problems
or maybe try this put the PS3 on then press the eject button (with no disc in) then hold it then switch the PS3 off at the back with your finger on the eject button still holding it then put it back on then the fan test should be working this may cool it down
it may be overheating
if this problem still continues go out and buy a inter cooler from a shop
if it STILL CARRIES ON phone up sony

I have had my PS3 for many years, and the best solution is definitely to:
1. Turn off PS3.
2. Hold the power button down; the system will turn on and turn off once again.
3. Once the System has been shutdown, re-press you finger until you hear 2 consecutive beeps (this takes awhile)
4. When you hear the 2 beeps take finger off power button.
5. You will be prompted to plug in your controller via USB and then hit the PS button
6. The Recovery menu will pop up.
From there click 'Restore File System'. It took about 30-45 sec and it solved my problem. I tried all kinds of tricks like standing the system on its side, cleaning it, etc. This is the only thing that worked. It doesn't wipe any memory, takes about 2 min total, so at least try it. I just did this to mine and am so happy that the problem is fixed. The reason this happens can be due to:
-Power outage(s)
-Having to unplug the system due to an internet freeze(s)
-Deleting/Installing multiple apps/music/videos/etc.
Hope this helps!

I did different, did the two beep trick, brought it up into safe mode. I tried to turn it off from there with the console power button but it wouldn t go red. So I unplugged it from power, started it normal, put in cd and it read it first try. PS - this is after hours of attempts with all other methods. Worth try...
