ARMY/AIRFORCE/MARINE/NAVY OFFICER? what should i do?
I am so nervous. I am a very smart person, but messed up and got a very low gpa in college. My grades in both my major (Political Science) and minor (History) average a 3.0 but all my electives brought me down below a 2.5. I have decided I want to enlist in the military because i have 65k in college loans to pay and the job prospects are few and far in between. I would love to work in gov, so it seems that once I am done I will find it easy to have a job. When I want something, I work hard.
My question is what should i expect from military life, and what are my best hopes of becoming a Naval officer with my gpa. I have a good internship and have the possibility of getting a letter of recommendation from both a state senator and a congressman. I want this but i am very afraid to go to the marines, I hear it is a boys club and things like sexual harassment scare me. Some people act like going to the marines will be horrible and I will hate it an be miserable. I think people are afraid to differentiate between hard work and horrible and thats what they mean. If its hard work, I am prepared. I just dont want to be unhappy

military life is pretty crazy sometimes especially these days. i would try the coast guard first and air force second. the coast guard doesn't take high school drop outs, problem children, or kids with a criminal back ground like the rejects the the army, marines and navy take. those services are really having problems with the people they let in. in some case gang members actually enlist in the military and try to keep active in gang activities when they are away from the base or on leave. the military used to put their hands on messed up kids and literally bead some sense into them. the kids feared their leaders and people in charge of them. the liberals have weakened the military as to what they can do with problem children on active duty to change their behavior or turn them around so at this time these problem kids don't fear or respect their leaders. sending them to mast, putting them in the brig, taking away money is just a little inconvenience to them and it doesn't change their attitude or out look on the military service or the people they work for. many in the military are unhappy especially the army, navy and marines due to long hours at work and time spent away from family. if you can work long hours with little encouragement, meet lots of dead lines and adapt to last minute changes to schedules or deployments that affect time with your family the military wants you.

You must graduate with at least a 3.0 to go to OCS.
The military does not repay college loans for officers. They do repay loans for enlisted through the GI Bill. If you want that 65k repaid quickly enlisting is the smart move.
Recommendations are nice but since you don't meet the basic requirements you cannot use recommendations to get you into OCS.
If you want to be a Naval Officer enlist first. Spend the next few years working your butt off 100% of the time and keep a positive attitude. Do everything perfectly, don't piss anyone off, and always get good reviews. If you can do that you can get into OCS because they take everything into account.
Every branch of the military is a boys club. It is especially tough for women officers since most of an officers promotion points come from the recommendations of her peers and superiors. It's just a fact that there are differences in the way people view women. However some women have gotten to the higher officer ranks despite the sexism rampant in the military. If you don't think you can hack it then don't become an officer.

To be a Marine Officer takes a lot of hard work and dedication. The training will temporarily punish you mentally and physically, but reward you with a lifetime of pride.
There's a Marine Officer's program called PLC. Platoon Leaders Class is a 10-week program in Quantico, Virginia that takes a civilian and attempts to make them into a new officer. If you complete that 10-weeks, you get commissioned as a second lieutenant. College GPA is one of the least important parts of the Marine Corps, what the Corps looks for is dedication, heart, and common sense.
As for the "boys club" and "sexual harassment" stuff, I have no clue what you're talking about, but the Marine Corps doesn't have anymore hazing or harassment than the other branches.

You have to decide for yourself what you would like to do, specificly in the Military. Are you the type of person that always pushes themselves 100% everyday and all things, and you want to work with people that are like that, Marine Corps is for you. There are also programs that can assist you with that 65k student loan. Marine Corps is also the only branch that can gearentee you a spot at flight school before you commit, if you want to be a pilot.
My point is look around and check out everything before you make a decision.

I think after college you should either do what the first person said:
enlist for a couple years in the navy then go to ocs and become an officer
or
the thing that blinette said:
go to marine plc and become a marine officer. Either way would probably work out fine
And to Jeff's comment, I read a story about a former gang member who joined the Army and served in Iraq, and while he was there he earned a purple heart for saving someone's life, so stop stereotyping people.

Go buy a short can of silly string at the dollar store (the 3-4" tall ones). Wrap it in black electrical tape, then start bragging about your new "pepper foam." When you've got their attention, take it out as if to show them, and spray it at them.
