If you don't have the disk, and you do not have the product key that goes with it, then there is not much you can do.
1) The only way to reformat, especially when Vista is already installed, is to have the XP installation CD to boot from.
2) XP is already up to SP3. If you don't activate it then you will not be able to apply the service packs, which you really want to because of the problems in earlier version.
Best to get your disk back.

That's the hard lesson about giving OS and programs registered and paid for by you!
Your only option now is to buy a new copy of XP.

go ahead with YOUR xp installation . If at any legal problems arise , you would be accused of lending your OS disk and not for installing XP in your system

1' ask them to let you have disc back and burn copy to give back to them.
2. can download from microsoft.com not as good as cd install.
3. if they used your serial # to install os on thuer computer not a problem you can still use it for yours more than one is allowed by microsoft, not good for your serial# to be floating around though.
4. serial# is on a tag back of computer

It will still work but Microsoft may say that it is a pirate copy if other people have registered it on other computers.

I just bought a lap top with Vista, I must say I dislike it . XP is a much better system.
