What's a good sewing machine for a beginner?
I can't spend more than $100 so I'm thinking of buying a used/refurbished from a reputable dealer locally.
I've heard great things about the quality and durability of Bernina and Husqvarna/Viking. Does anyone have any experience with these or other machines?
I will be using the machine for sewing clothes for myself and my children, also curtains and perhaps doll clothes.
Will not be doing any embroidery or quilting or sewing on very heavy fabrics.

You are very smart. Even a used machine from your dealer comes with a one year guarantee and endless free help. I am a Viking owner since 1985. That was my choice since that was the nearest dealer.
And I still get free help. Also take advantage of free classes.
The machine is only as good as the user and her dealer.

I have a top of the line Bernette, which is made by Bernina but doesn't have the computer embroidery and other fancy stuff on it. I love it, it is very reliable, and it's easy to sew with. I've had a couple of cheaper machines, and they were very annoying, as I would have to stop and adjust the machine fairly often.

Hi, Veritas:
My wife bought a Singer. Although it is now made in Asia, it's still a good machine and does more than she can fathom. It was less than your budget at Wal-Mart.
She's still a beginner, though, and enjoying retirement.

I got a "Shark" by Euro Pro, and I love it! It's portable so I can put it in a closet and easily get it out and put on the kitchen table to work. I believe it's within your price range.
