Why won't my camcorder videos play on any of my computer's players or upload to YouTube?
I just bought a Sony Handycam and made a short video which I successfully uploaded from the camcorder's harddrive to my PC. The video is 1m42s in length, 88.9 MB. On "Properties" the file type is listed as "MPEG" but the file name ends in ".mpg", (I don't know if that's important or not.)
None of my media players are able to play this file correctly. Windows Media Player plays it at what appears to be higher than normal speed with no sound at all. Also the video is patchy, that is ther are little squares popping up all through it.
When I try to play it with Realplayer it gives me a message--
"Some portions of this file cannot be played. Would you like to see if there is an update for this file?"
When I click no it plays just like the Windows player-- no sound and patchy playback. If I click yes it then tells me "Realplayer needs to download new software to play this clip." So I clicked Ok. After searching, it then informs me that there is "no software update from Real to support this content."
Quicktime player won't play it at all.
Finally, when I tried to upload it to YouTube it started trying to load it but it was very slow. After about 10 minutes of uploading (finishing only about 10% of it) it finally quit and said it couldn't finish because of an "unknown error."
What is wrong with this file? What do I need to do to get this file to play like the hundreds of other MPEG files I have on my harddrives? None of them give me any trouble. Why is this one different? I installed all the software that came with it if that has anything to do with it.

Sounds like you are missing the proper codec to play the .mpg file. Try playing in WindDVD or DivX.
Another option is to convert the file. Try 'Any Video Converter' from cnet:
