Why do taxi have "police interceptors" written on their rear light?

I have noticed "police interceptors" in the back of taxis. It is in very tiny letters but legible. All the taxis have it. I want to know what it means.

That means those taxi's are Ford Crown Victoria's and are equipped with the "police interceptor" package which includes heavier duty suspension, dual exhaust for a bit more power, stuff like that.

They are police interceptors and taxi companies buy them that way.

The VIN code P71 is your clue to this.

I don't get where taxi companies buy old cop cars...they don't have to! The P71 is cheaper than the actual limo P70 and P72 heavy duty taxi versions.

Once the car reached too many miles or has passed it's usable service life, local police departments auction their old vehicles off. Taxi services are the main purchasers of the old PD cars.

they are old police cruisers sold to the taxi cab drivers.

Source(s): seeing lots of the the cabs that said police interceptors, and friend who loved buying them at auctions. the cities/counties/and states auction them off at a certain mileage or age.
