If secret ballots are still a choice under card check, how will I be able to exercise that choice?

Whenever the card check legislation is criticized, Obama or other supporters of it say that secret ballots are still a choice. So, if I'm working somewhere and someone is running around trying to intimidate people into signing the card to go union, how do I get it changed to a secret ballot instead?

If I can't then whose choice is it?

Update:

Westhill: 2 things. First thing, you say "More money and better benefits in the long run will give you more freedom of choice in life" and "if you're working somewhere ". The two are not unrelated.

Second, there is attempted intimidation now from both sides, but the secret ballot helps protect from that. Eliminating the secret ballot does not make intimidation from either side go away, it makes it more effective. It sounds like you're agreeing it won't really be a choice.

The unions get to choose, not individuals. It's everyone secret, or everyone open. Obama is using deceptive language.

First of all, if you're working somewhere now, you're lucky.

But to answer your question, under current law, it will primarily be the employer who is trying to intimidate you into NOT forming a union. Under the card check scheme, the organizer MAY try to intimidate you. Either way, you need to get past your fear of intimidation and look at the end result. Are you likely to make more money in a union shop? More money and better benefits in the long run will give you more freedom of choice in life.
