Can you tell me a software that can convert mp4 video taken by my phone to avi?

MP4 is a media container, it can store more kinds videos and audios, WMM do not support all mp4 files.

You can use RZ Video Converter to convert mp4 video to

wmv(wmv2) files, then you can import the wmv file to WMM.
