Why are the page layout buttons in Excel 2007 ghosted?

About 2/3 of the buttons (margins, orientation, size, print titles, the entire scale to fit box, most of the arrange box, etc.) on the Page Layout ribbon are ghosted/greyed out. All I want to do is change the page orientation and center my stuff. It works fine in Word, but nothing I've tried in Excel has helped.

And no, I can't do it from print preview - I'm running WindowsXP on my Mac with VMware Fusion, and I don't have a printer installed on that image, so I can't access the print preview options.

Am I doing something stupid? I normally use Office 2008 for Mac, so I'm not too familiar with 2007.

The first thing to check is - are you entering data into a cell when you are trying to change the page layout.

While you are entering data in a cell many toolbar selections are disabled (grayed out.) Press enter, tab, or one of the direction arrows to get out of the cell entry mode and look again.

If this doesn't work, modify your question, or email me to tell me I'm stupid for suggesting anything so obvious , and I will remove my answer so others will be more likely to make suggestions.

Right click on where you see Home, Insert, etc and untick the box that says 'Minimise ribbon'
