Why is the Quran not in chronological order?

If any of you own a Quran with footnotes or a preface before the Arabic text you would will see that the translator informs the reader of the time of revelation and the purpose of revelation.

What I do not understand is why the Quran is not chronological order, why aren't the Makkan and Medina surahs separated instead of them following a jumbled up order?

What is the purpose of the Quran being laid out the way it is?

Also why is that in some of footnotes/prefaces it is mentioned that a Surah which was revealed at Mecca, later, has passages revealed at Medina include inside it?

If you purchased a book of history, wouldn't you want the information contained within to follow a certain timeline?

If so why didn't the compilers of the Quran have ordered "the book of history" in the same fashion?

To the asker: I'm sorry I can't answer your main question.

As I understand it, the answer to 'What is the purpose of the Quran being laid out the way it is?': Other than surah al-fatihah, it is longest to shortest (I haven't double checked though).

Footnotes: I dunno, maybe an error, or maybe it's a majority thing, I haven't seen it for myself to really take a good guess.

History books don't always go chronologically. Sometimes, in order to explain phenomena, it has to jump around a little, go forward with this group, back to follow another. Sometimes to get to a discovery before you get to it's inventor since it impacts another group, etc.

I'd be interested to know if the"true" chronological order of the Quran is known.

I know that it's not in chronological order because it can't really be. Basically the Quran came in bits and pieces to the prophet. It's not like a whole Surah (chapter) was revealed and voila. Different verses were revealed by Allah (God) depending on the situations at the time. The way the Quran is compiled now is by surah. I'm not sure exactly how it's done though so you might want to do a little research on that. And your question about a book of history, I would like to emphasize that the Quran isn't really a book of history. And even if it were, history books are often not arranged in chronological order because it may imply a different meaning by choosing not to do so.

That's all I know though. Sorry if I haven't answered your other questions.

Oh yea about the Madina/ Makka surahs, since like I said before, the surah wasn't revealed as a whole, some verses may have been revealed when the prophet was in Mekka. Hope that helps.

Allah prefferred to put Quran all Ayahs under the topic of chapters based on subject matter. Most Muslims do like Quran the way Allah has put together for us. Quran is not a history of man kind. It is a book of guidance with only some example of human history telling people what Allah did to the nations who rejected Allah's guidance and tried to kill Rasools whom Allah sent for guidance of mankind.

The Holy Quran is not a story book, it's a book of principles. In fact the only story completed together is the story of Prophet Yusuf (AS). You will see that Allah (SWT) has integrated laws, principles, lessons, and stories within the surahs. For instance he will be explaining the story of Musa (AS), then mention the disbelievers, and then mention believers, then the day of judgement, so you do not forget

The layout of the Quran is one of the main aspects of its divinity.

the order we have ,is to be followed, the long commentries and parentheses and foot notes limits the message and the scope of Glorious Quran,Quran explains itself

to hide the peaceful, abrogated verses revealed in mecca. now you can still quote them to prove it's a religion of peace.
