My son is turning 14 and wants a Ipod or MP4. I do not want to pay more than $80. What is best and works well?

He wanted one that was a touch and did video too but I do not want to pay that much for his first one and he wants to take it to school etc.. There are so many brands does it really matter if it is IPOD brand or do the cheaper ones work as well. I know nothing about these so the more I look the more confused I get. Please give me suggestions on what to buy. I will be giving him a $25 card for music too.

If he wants an iPod, the shuffle starts off at $79.

The new shuffle has a voice modulator to tell you the name of song and artist playing, but it requires proprietary Apple headphones to use the device (included with the iPod).

He can use iTunes with a $25 iTunes gift card to download music legally at 99 cents a song.

If you get him a standard mp3 player, he can use amazons mp3 download service with an amazon gift card. As far as mp3 players, they all generally work the same and have much of the same features.  Just get one that is in your price range and that appeals to his choice of aesthetics.
