What do you wish you'd learned in school when it comes to nutrition information?

It seems to me that we were never taught much about nutrition in school. There was the food pyramid, which is not correct (at least not the one they used when I was in school a decade and a half ago.) We were taught to eat fruits and veggies and "a well balanced diet" but not given much information about what that was.

Now, as a result, we seem to have many problems in society with obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. We have people not understanding basic things like where protein comes from or how much we need. I wish we had learned more about vitamins, minerals, proteins and carbs. I wish we'd learned about different types of diets like vegetarianism. I wish we'd learned more about what foods had what benefits.

What about you?

    Anything!

We had a food pyramid poster in one of our classes.

    "Drink milk for strong bones."

    That was it.

And the Harvard Nurses' Study shows that milk makes one more prone to osteoporosis.

    Awesome.

I wish I knew about all of the different vitamins and minerals and why they were important.

I wish I had known what would happen if I didn't get all of my vitamins and minerals and the right amount of water.

Most of all, I wish I had been taught HOW to get all of the vitamins and minerals and water in a realistic manner. "Following the food pyramid" is nice, but who even knows how big a serving of grains even is? 6-11 is an awful lot, it seems. I wish that we had devoted even a day to putting together meals for a day that would fulfill the WHOLE food pyramid. To be honest, I have no idea how to do that even now. I mean, I can guess, but I wish I had been taught when I was a kid.

Well, we had what was called The Basic Four when I was in school. The point then was to eat equal parts of Meats group, Breads & grains group, Dairy group, and Fruits & Vegetables group.

Also, eating this way 3 times a day, and not eat a thing between meals.

I wish that we had learned instead that moderation is the key, and there is not One DIetary Guideline For Everybody. Different bodies need somewhat different amounts of each.

Also learning what vitamins and minerals and other nutrients that we really need to get through our day would have been most helpful.

They always taught us that correct portions are the serving size-the size of your fist.

I wish we learned about different vitamins. That would be so helpful. Now I'm hearing about all these vitamins we should be getting and I don't know what they are or if they're even needed as much as people say they are.

    Concepts like:

Reasons to eat: hunger, social situations and being polite, fullness.

    Cultural differences and balanced diet.

The role of herbs and spices in diet, nutrition, and metabolism.

How the body and brain are designed to manage your weight so you don't have to focus on it (unlike what every woman's magazine will tell you)...

i agree with you, ive always known what was healthy and what wasnt, but portion control..like we learned how many servings of everything we were supposed to get in each day, but we were never taught how much a serving is..i didnt really learn that until i was pregnant with my first and went and saw a nutritionist..our portions are completely out of control, its rediculous and completely disgusting to me that we eat so much

It was easy to figure out what foods are healthy..... but portion control, that's what I wish I had learned earlier.

Did you have to take Family and Consumer Science? Or Health? We have to take both when I was in middle school and we have to take health in high school. They teach you all about nutrition.
