don't be sorry for being ignorant and/or asking questions. 'ignorant' is NOT a 'bad' word, even though most people use it to sound like it is. if you don't ask questions, you can't learn anything.
but yeah, you can get bad things from websites if the creator is an a-hole, and there are lots of those around these days.
you can take some precautions so as to not allow as much into your computer by telling your browser not to accept all cookies. it's 'usually' safe to accept the initial cookie from most websites, but beyond that - no - don't allow any others.
for instance; my browser is set to prompt me. so each time a cookie wants in, i can either accept or block.
think of a cookie as a 'door'. when you accept a cookie, you've opened a door. and what happens when you leave your door open? you're inviting anyone and everyone to come right on in.
there's a really nice little program called; "noflash" that will block a literal ton of crap that would normally be allowed to get in through a browser. yes, it blocks flash, but is easily turned off if you want to allow flash to run in your browser. i hate flash, so i always leave that turned off. i don't do 'purdies' so it doesn't bother me at all not to see that crap. plus it makes a browser faster not to have to load all that time-wasting garbage...

You can get a virus from being on a website and not agreeing to download something. I recommend using AVG Free:

(if that doesnt work) http://download.cnet.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-Editi...
