There is a very old phrase in engineering - Keep it simple.

Unfortunately, car manufacturers want to sell cars, so often it is the overcomplicated ones that fail first. For example - some manufacturers even put relays and control boards in passenger footwells! - gets a bit damp and caput.

I would research the problem online - as this is a common failure.

Try rocking the vehicle - driving forwards, then back while engaging and dissengaging the 4wd - then leave it in 2wd.

It could be a stuck switch, or the drive motor/servo is not working. Both need to be checked out. Make sure there is enough lubrication on the mechanism too.

Sounds like your differential could be dodgy. Is the diff lock stuck or can you get it back to two wheel drive again? It shouldn't cost too much to get it repaired. Feel bad for you though, it's still a hassle.
