1.A ttempt to Login to Windows 2000 as the Administrator. Since many people never set their administrator password, you may still be able to get in to that account and reset your password. By default, this will not be shown. To access this user do the following. At the login screen where all the users are shown, press alt, ctrl and delete TWICE. It will bring up the old style login like windows 98. At user type "Administrator", leave password field empty and press enter to try and log in.

If successful you have 3 choices to do this.

1: Right click on my computer and select "Manage". On the left side select "local users and groups" and then "Users". Your login name will appear in the right hand side. Right click on it and select "Set Password". Fill in the fields or leave them empty. Apply it and your done.

2: Go to "control panel" and Select "User Accounts". Int he window select "change an account" and then select witch user. From there you select "Remove password" And your done if it works. I have encountered it before that it asks for the password before it will remove it.

3: Go to "Start", "Run". Type in "cmd" to bring up the command window. In the window type...:

    "net user *USERNAME* 1234"

"net user" Always in the beginning. After the word "user" is a space and the user name. (NB) This does not work with user names witch is more than 1 word. Example 'user 1' would not work where 'User1' would work. After the user name has been typed in there is another space and then a new password where I typed 1234.

    So... "net user *USERNAME* 1234"

First did you forget the admin password or just a user password? If you still know the admin password, log in as admin and reset the user in control panel -> users and groups. Windows 2000 is designed specifically to not allow you reset the admin password if you don't know it. You cannot use the 2000 install cd to do it either. How to fix it really depends on how much time you want to put into it: 1) You can use a linux password crack tool to reset the admin password. The disadvantages to this are that it can damage your registry and you might be forced to reinstall Windows anyway. 2) Remove the hard drive and back your files up to another system, then reinstall. It's a good idea to make a separate admin account on your kids pc and just give them another account with admin access to prevent this from happening in the future.

Reboot, hit F8 to go to Safe mode. Log in as administrator, go to Control Panel, user accounts. Find whatever user you need to get the password for, and click remove password.

If you absolutely HAVE to keep the remaining password instead of clearing it out, google a program called Ophcrack. It burns to a CD, which you put in and reboot. It will load into its own operating system, then crack the Windows passwords. This might take a while, and for ease and time, I'd recommend just going in to Safe Mode.
