Phil is a Pelz pupil, which means he chips and pitches with nearly every club in the bag at some point.
The rule of thumb is you chip/pitch with the club that will let you get the ball rolling as quickly as possible. Some might disagree, but the vast majority of golfers are better off with that strategy. So you'd hit use a 56 or 60 only when you have no other choice.
The lob wedge is a great club as long as you know when and how to use it. If you tend to sweep the ball and don't take decent divots then you might struggle with it by hitting skulled line drives or high shots that roll up the face and get little distance with little distance control.

He actually uses 52*, 56*, 60* and 64* - on average. he has been known to take out the 64 and add another iron, or fairwaywood, or driver. I'm also pretty sure he chips with all of them, depending on the situation.
He is arguably the best short-game golfer on Tour, even when Tiger is on his game.
You can literally chip with any of the 14 clubs in your bag. It's actually easier to learn one chip swing, then change clubs for different distances.
You wouldn't be "wrong" for wanting to use a 60*, but hopefully this helps: the most important loft you should think about is bounce angle (the flange of a wedge). Most SW have high bounce lofts (12-14 degrees, give or take) which makes them more playable on softer surfaces. Most LW have low bounce (3-8 degrees) which helps more on harder terrains.
Just something to let you know that you always have options- you aren't stuck with just one "do-all" club.

dude phil mickelson carries a 50, 55, and 60 degree wedges he also uses the callaway I-mix wedges that only he and others being sponsored by callaway can get theyr probly not gunna be buyable by any terms for a long period of time (i know makes you want them huh) and i hit a 56 wedge dont move any higher of a loft trust me i tried to use my spin tech 64 and 60 wedge but those are two lofts that you will need some pro lessons just to use them right.
trust me dont go any higher than 56 with a 60 and 64 depending on how hard or fast you swing you wont get the ball very far and you will have very many miss hits and very many shots missed short that because of the spin from the club will problyt role back to their original position. sorry about the bad spelling...

get the 60..... it's amazing..
phil uses 4 wedges and he's a master in short game
He currently uses 52 56 60 and 64 degree wedges
Most people don't like using the 60 because it goes short.
But if you're a young gun, i strongly recommend getting one. You could get really creative with it

Phil chips with EVERYTHING. At one tournament he had 5 wedges in his bag. Chip with what ever feels comfortable for you. I chip with 7 iron all the way down to my 58* wedge. You can even chip with hybrids!
