What is that little envelope symbol on my phone?

ok so i have a samsung phone and there is this little symbol on the top bar, its like a little envelope, and a little shield in front with either a "1" or just a line. what does it mean? it could mean that i have a new text right? but i DONT have a new text.please help :)

    Usually it means that you have a new message of some sort. Most of the phones that I've seen that use the envelope icon for messages are CECT phones; on those phones, it can take you to a menu for picture OR text messages, so it might be that you have a picture message waiting, or possibly even an e-mail (I'm not sure about that one). I'd check all the possibilities, in any case.

    If you find you STILL don't have a message, then you can always do "hard" reset on your phone. Be sure to do this AFTER you've backed up the data!

    It could mean that you have a new email, or it could mean that your phone has 1 new security update available for download via the phone.

    Phones, like computers, tend to have security updates and bug fixes on a regular basis.
