Chicago O'Hare Terminal 1 to Terminal 3?
I saw a few questions asking about this from others, but need clarification on a few things.
My girlfriend is flying out west to see me in May. She is connecting at ORD, arriving on United (Terminal 1) and departing on American (Terminal 3) and she has about 50 minutes to make it. I have flown through ORD a few times but I don't remember any details about getting from gate to gate, I always had plenty of time thanks to snow delays.
My question is - getting between T1 and T3 - if she takes the train, does she have to go through security at T3? Would it possibly be faster to walk and avoid having to wait in security again? How long does it take on the train between those terminals?
Thanks!

Terminal 1 is actually 2 terminals/buildings, one is farther away than the other. Both serve United.
Definately walk but she is going to have to keep moving. Going outside to the train will require coming back through security and that will be a timing problem. It is a pretty good hike. I would estimate 20 mins. minimum at a quick pace. More likely is 30 mins.

The best way to get between the two terminals is to walk. DON'T exit security, you never know how long it will take to clear again. The few minutes you save by taking the train will be eaten up by having to go through security again.
Follow the signs to T3 or your concourse letter. The route is well marked and you won't have to go through security again. I would walk fast with no stops until I reached my departure gate. Have airline phone numbers handy just in case. It really shouldn't be a problem

She can walk from T1 to T3. Go to the O'Hare web site for a map of the airport. As long as the flight is on time she should be fine. She should let the staff know she has a close connecting flight. They sometimes will help these passengers get off the plane first.

50 minutes is a tight connection and she is changing airlines. I hope she is sitting as far in the front of the plane as possible so she can get out and on her way as quickly as possible.
There is a downloadable and printable map of O'Hare here.

I would make a color copy and have her carry it. Make sure it is large enough so she can study the map well in advance to give her a rough sense of where she will be when she exits the plane. The cabin staff will announce before landing what gate the plane will use on arrival. She should find it on her map and plot her route.
You can see that regardless of mode of inter-terminal travel, she will have to go through security again but there are a number of security stations in each terminal. Only if she was changing planes in Terminal 1 she would not have to go through security again.
I doubt that walking will be faster than the train. It is farther than it looks. It should only take 5-10 minutes or so. Provided the plane arrives on time and that she exits it relatively quickly, she should be able to make it. Studying the map ahead of time will help that she does not get lost and lose valuable time. She should look for the signs for the train in Terminal 1 as soon as she starts the "journey" but studying the map ahead of time should help her.
Sorry to stress the map study but as they say in the military, time spent in reconnaissance is seldom wasted.
I hope she has a sucessful trip.

Well... having to connect there tens if not hundreds of times, you'll be fine. Check the maps at the link below to familiarize yourself with the layout.
