2000-2003 Jetta TDI? are they reliable?
I am looking for an economical vehicle to replace my super guzzling Chevy Pick-up which I no longer need due to our wonderful economy. I have been looking at used Jetta tdi's Sounds like a great idea to save $$$ but are they reliable??? Automatic with 100,000 miles. What do you know about them?

if it was well maintained it can go for 500K miles, if it wasn't it might be near death as it is. Have a diesel mechanic look it over. I regularly see TDIs over 320K miles and after 100K miles the fuel economy with a manual can be over 50 on the highway. I am a VW tech at a dealer and have found the diesels to be more reliable than the gas models.

Nice. You need to maintain them well. They are very fun cars to drive but not so reliable. But I believe the tdi is better. Never put anything cheap in that car. I only use the best of everything- now. Before not knowing I used cheap everything and it was killing the car. Good luck.

Yes.
Diesels are very reliable. More than gas engines.
The Jetta TDI is hard to find these days since it gets 40mpg city and 44mpg highway.

Depends on the car condition and how it was run. The first thing I would do is have the timing belt replaced. No question about it.
My diesel gave me 700Kmiles before the body rotted away. No problems.
