I think most of the country was listening when Louis fought Schmeling in the rematch in 38 as Germany was waging war in Europe and Schmeling was viewed as the bad guy though he really wasn't as he never agreed to Hitler's war machine. When Louis knocked him out in one round it sent a clear message to Hitler that they didn't have some kind of superior race.
