I just made mashed potatoes and they have turned out very gluey. Is there any way I can fix them?

Gluey mashed potatoes are usually a result of the technique you use to mash them. Avoid using a food processor or blender. Once that starch turns to glue, there's not much to do to save them - try adding some instant mashed potato flakes to them.

    Gluey Mashed Potatoes

Did you use red potatoes? Those are not the best potatoes to use for mash. If they are "gluey" there isn't much you can do except maybe add a bit of powder instant potatoes to the mix. Next time use Idaho or Russetts for mash. The reds make the potatoes too gooey but are great for roasting, boiling(for corned beef) and potato salad.

Invest in a short handled potato masher which is easier to handle. Add a little milk after the first crushing and a little butter and continue mashing. I bet that if you get this gluey mass it is because either you are using the wrong kind of potatoes or more likely putting them through a food processor or blender. That is garanteed to do that. It is the over processing of the potato releasing far too much starch.

Red potatoes do indeed turn gluey when mashed. Try adding some cream and butter and whipping them a bit more.

Alternatively add some parmesean cheese and cheddar shredds, put them in mounds on greased baking sheet and bake into duchesse potatos. 350 F for about 15 minutes.

You can also add some chives and parsley to that to make them more colorful and flavorful.

I assume you mean too runny? If so, there isn't much you can do.

The way I mash potato is to add a tiny bit of milk and butter and mash. If its not runny enough, add a bit more of both and so on until it is smooth and the right consistency.

If they're gluey, no, they are ruined. If they are just too runny, add some more potatoe.

try adding a little powdreed instant potatoes to them, if you have any. If not, you could try putting them in the microwave for a few minutes
