MTG rules on an obscure situation?

I ran into an odd situation on Magic the Gathering Online last night while playing in a booster draft against a friend. The situation seems like a bug to us, and was caused by my own miscalculation, but it ended up winning me the game (though I still lost the match).

I attacked with a non-flying creature that is normally 2/2, but had been pumped up to 4/4 through Devour. The creature also has the ability to be given Trample, but I did not use it. My friend blocked with a non-flying, non-reach creature that starts out as a 1/1 with Shroud that gains a +1/+1 token every time a creature is put into a graveyard, and had thusly been pumped up to 7/7. After defenders had been declared, but before damage was dealt, I played an instant that gave my creature flying until end of turn. (I had meant to do that before defenders were declared, but had a brain fart and did not do that in the pre-combat phase.) I was not entirely sure how this would be resolved, but I expected that since defenders had been declared already, the 4/4 and the 7/7 would trade damage normally and the flight was thus meaningless.

The creatures did indeed trade damage. However, for no reason either of us can think of (and this situation did not seem to be covered in the comprehensive rulebook online), both the 4/4 and the 7/7 died.

Any ideas if there is a rule regarding non-fliers who don't have reach blocking non-fliers that become fliers before damage is dealt?

No way is that a rule. That would be a glitch, one that I would use on as many people as possible (just for the WTF factor) before they fix it. I can only imagine how the program thought that should happen.

Source(s): People would take advantage of that like there was no tomorrow if that were a rule. Wings of Velis Vel would be even more infamous than it is in my circle.

It sounds like you are confused about combat in Magic. It is important to know the steps of combat, here are the basic steps: 1. Declare attackers. The player whose turn it is decides which of his creatures will attack. It sounds like you understand that the attacking player attacks the other player and not his creatures directly, the defending pllayer decides which creatures will block and which creatures they will block. 2. Declare blockers The defending player chooses which creatures they would like to block and assigns them to block the attacking creatures. Each creature can only block one other creature unless the card says different. 3. Assign Damage If multiple creatures are blocking the same attacker, the attacker has to choose in what order to apply the damage (unless the defending creature has an ablility called banding, which isn't used on recent cards). The attacker picks an order to assign lethal damage to each creature, he must assign lethal damage to each defender in order and then move on to the next creature in line. It is possible for either player to cast spells when they have priority during each step. In your example if all 3 1/1's blocked the 3/3, if no other abilities are involved, they would all kill each other. For a more comlicated example, say he picked the order of A, B, and C for your 1/1's and you had a Giant growth in your hand. If you cast your Giant Growth on the 1/1 he chose to deal damage to 1st, your 1/1 (or 4/4 with the giant growth) would kill his 3/3 and all 3 of your creatures would live. There are other complicated examples involving things like trample and deathtouch, but these are the basics.

There is no such rule regarding blockers. I believe you have either found an error or you didn't notice / list another card in play that would screw things around.
