Does anyone know how to make a solid cutting board out of a cherry plank.?

My friend has a cherry trunk that he had cut into 4 boards. They are 3-4" thick and about 12" wide. They were cut about 3-4 years ago. What kind of cure does it need? How do you cure a solid hardwood cutting board? I do not want to cut it and make an end cut cutting board.

If it has been that long since it was cut all you need to do is cut out the shape, sand and finish. For cutting boards the best way to finish is not with any type of varnish although boiled linseed oil is acceptable. I have had several and made butcher block s. Most people just apply mineral oil available at any drug store with a cloth. Let it soak into the wood and apply again. Two or three applications will usually saturate the surface. Rub down with a dry cloth to remove excess. Periodic treatment with the oil is all that is needed. You know you should apply oil when the wood starts to look dry..

I also treat mine with paraffin wax. After it has been oiled I use a cheese grater and sprinkle grated wax on the wood. Cover with a piece of paper and use a clothes iron on low to melt the wax. Then buff with a dry cloth. You can also just rub the wax on the board and buff. Gives a finished sheen.
