The word "fan" does actually mean "[the] devil".

The devil has many names, in Swedish as well as in other languages:

Djävulen, Sa*an, Fan, Belsebub, Horn-Per etc.

Literal translation:

"fy fan" = ugh! [the] devil.

"för fan" = for the devil.

One possible translation of the intended meaning:

"fy fan!" = damn it.

"för fan!" = bloody h*ll.

But few Swedish people recognize what they are actually saying, that they involve characters from the bible.

Another popular Swedish curses are

"Det vete fan!" = [only] the devil knows.

When I hear someone saying this I use to say:

"Do you really think he knows that?"

and 9 out of 10 people respond: "who knows what?"

(which pretty much proves my point!)

I think it's exactly the same way when English speaking people say f**k. They don't really mean "sexual intercourse". It's just a word used to express irritation.

Fan is the first English word I learned, by my grandfather.

It was the only English word he knew (he learned it from a button in his SAAB, and found it very amusing).

It's supposed to be either "Fy fan" or "För fan". And believe me, it does NOT mean devil. Devil is "djävul".

"Fy fan" would best be translated to "damn it".

"För fan" would best be translated to "for f u c k s sake".
