Is there a newer version of Windows XP?

I'm looking to buy a new desktop pc and I do not want Windows Vista. I thought I heard that there is a newer version of Windows XP (or something similar) coming out. I'm looking to spend under $500 for basic use including burning DVDs and CDs

You may have heard about Service Pack 3 for Windows XP. It's not a new operating system by any means. It's just a rollup of all the Windows XP fixes on a single disk.

Getting XP on a new machine will be tricky now. I'm not sure even the big boys (HP, Dell, ...) can give you the downgrade option any more. And I would be very leery of anyone who said, "Pssst! Wanna buy a copy of Windows XP?" to me. No telling what else might be included.

MS is planning on coming out with Windows 7 next year, and they might sweeten the pot later on by offering a free or reduced-rate upgrade to people who buy a machine with Vista this year. No guarantee of that, though.

    Hope that helps.

There's no new version of XP, only another 2 OS, which is Vista and Windows 7(an update of Vista coming out in 2010)
