It was not a "downfall". They were glad to be bought out by Verizon. Alltell was doing well in several markets and Consumer Reports wrote nice assessments of them (you can get the issues free at the library).
New York Times (www.nytimes.com) has some articles about the company and the merger. Wall Street Journal has some good articles (free at the library; they charge online)..
