Hi
My sisters went through that.. The best thing to do is just let him cry... He will cry for a few days and after that he'll know that you are not going to pay attention to him.. So all you do put him in bed kiss him goodnight turn of the light.. You should leave the door open and leave.. if he gets out of bed put him back in dnt yell at him but dnt be nice either stay firm and keep doing that.. Every once in a while yell out softly GO TO SLEEP (his name) and after a few days he should get the hang of it :) just dont give up
Good luck

Our daughter went through the same thing I thought we were going to go crazy. Set up a good but simple routine every night bath, book, teeth, bed. We learned the worse thing was to keep going in and checking on her. We went in three times. First time to say "good night we love you" and laid her back down. Second and third time we just went in said nothing and laid her down. From then on we let her cry it out. At 12 months babies are starting to realize that there is life still going on when they go to bed. So we put a night light in her room and let her read a book or play with her doll. This is what did the trick in end. I added some websites in the source section that we used for ideas. Hang in there he will finally get back on his sleep pattern ours is 20 months and sleeping all night and going to bed easy.

The No Cry Sleep Solution by Elizabeth Pantley is an awesome book.
OR
The Baby Whisperer Solves All Your Problems by Tracy Hogg
Both books give great suggestions on getting baby to sleep on his own without making him cry it out.
