Game crashing before it starts on Vista?
For some reason when ever i start a program (especially games) the screen will go black as if it were about to start the program and then it'll crash and say that so and so program has stopped working. It does this for 2 games so far. Could someone tell me whats wrong?

If you have a dual or quad core cpu some games will crash because the game doesn't recognize the multiple cores and just crashes. Most of my older games do this. I bought a Dell quad core cpu and most of my games don't work.

It's not really Steam's problem, but the individual games' problem with Vista. Some games aren't compatible with Vista (and sometimes 7 as well).

There might be a compatibility problem with the software you're using. People have been complaining that Vista isn't the most stable OS and that it has many compatibility problems with software. There is, however, a compatibility mode that you can try using. If that doesn't work, you could try formatting--this is what I usually do if I'm having software failure problems, and at times it resolves the problem.
I hope I helped. If worst comes to worst, you could either call your computer manufacturer number or bring your computer to a place like Geek Squad, where they'll be able to help with the types of problems you're having, at a price, of course.

Hey jk7356- Jeff here from the Windows Outreach Team. Hopefully this answer helps: going along with what Matt said, it could be a compatibility issue with your games and Vista. Try searching for the games you are trying to play here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/compatibility/Def... . If you do not have the correct software/hardware, it will help you figure out what you need to download to get your games running, or let you know that your game was just not meant to be played with Vista.
Good Luck,
Jeff

check to see which version of vista you are running, either 32-bit or 64-bit. If it is 64-bit then that is most likely your problem as some applications will not work on it.
