Rooster in the city! Crows all hours of the day AND night. What can I do?

I live in a little subdivision within city limits. The house behind me has a rooster (no hens, just one rooster). That thing crows 24/7, I've lived here for 2 and a half years and am just sick and tired of this. I cannot sleep at night (it's right outside my bedroom window) and I cannot take a nap during the day because of it's constant crowing. My doctor even prescribed sleeping aids. The rooster was in my yard the other day so I called animal control. They came and told the owner that he had to keep his rooster pinned up and move it 300 feet from my yard. He did but that doesn't make it any more quiet. It's still directly behind my bedroom window crowing 24/7! What do you think I should do? What is causing this rooster to crow SO much? My parents had roosters when I was growing up but I cannot remember them being so noisy.

PS.. It really gets bad now that a man down the street also has a rooster. One rooster will crow and the other will crow immediately after wards! It's like a crowing battle.

Update:

I like your post William.

They keep the rooster in a cage... basically a small chain-link dog kennel with a tarp over the top. It's small and I feel bad for the rooster.

There is a street light in their yard!!!

I'm always afraid to go over there. The yard is a disaster, they live in a FEMA trailer still and it's really just a mess.

When I called animal control last week the officer spoke to the man. The man said that he had another property and would move the rooster. But still has not done it!

The rooster down the street is kept in a proper coop. It does not crow at night.

PS. I have nothing against roosters. I am an animal lover! My dad had roosters when I was growing up but they nested in a shed at night. They didn't bother me... they can be pretty protective though, I was chased by one, lol.

Ask your neighbor to please pen his rooster and have a proper enclosure for it to sleep in at night. The rooster is crowing at night because he can see lights, if he is in a coop that is dark he will not crow.

If it is kept in a pen in your neighbors yard the noise probably will not bother you.

Just speak to your neighbor in a non-confrontational manner and explain to him what your problems are with his bird, if he is a good neighbor he should take action.

You may also want to try sleeping with white noise. White noise is any type of background noise that will mask other noises. You can try a fan or an air filter machine or there are even machines that are made just for this purpose that emit an ocean, rain, waterfall, or any number of soothing sounds.

Do you live in Honolulu? LOL...Seriously, when I was there, there were chickens and roosters everywhere - even downtown in the city area. They would hang out in parking garages cuz people would feed them scraps.

Not much you can do, but maybe try and speak to the 2 neighbors and explain. Talk to some other neighbors and see if they feel same as you. Maybe you could all get together and have a neighborly sit down and discuss your frustrations. Worse comes to Worse you can just start filing complaints with Animal Control. Eventually they will remove the roosters. Thats sad if that has to happen, and I dont know that I would want to be that person - but ya gotta do what ya gotta do. If its affecting you, its probably affecting the whole neighborhood & no ones sleeping

if it was in your yard the other day that was you perfect chance to get rid of the Rooster and have a good feed for all the sleepless nights he caused you, besides that I just wonder if the Rooster were looked up in a very dark cage that may quieten him a bit at night ,I had some success with that , if not talk to your City Council I would say that is noise polution and they may do something about it,have you talked to your Neighbour about it just suggest the dark to him ,if that does not work wait for the next time the Rooster is in your yard .Good luck

Jeez Louise...I live in the city and my roosters crow whenever I turn on the back porch light, open the door, or when one of the neighbors does either of those things, or just pulls into their driveway and the boys hear them. I think that your aunt is bad luck

Check into the local noise ordinance. Most city have a noise ordinance from dusk to dawn. The police will come to enforce it. The police often take up to one hour to respond to this type of ordinance enforcement. If the rooster is still crowing when they arrive, they will ask the owner to shut the animal up. He will have to put the animal inside his house/garage to reduce noise, or receive a ticket/warning. You may have to complain more than once a day/week for this noise reduction to be effective.

roosters are territorial ,they crow to assert themselves and challenge any takers.if the rooster has no hens he may be calling to attract some .go find a hen and toss her over the fence then he has other stuff to do besides crow. "my neighbors all have dogs ,that bark constantly day and night, i can't imagine a rooster could be worse".
