Question about Lawn Fertilizer...?
Can anyone recommend a good lawn fertilizer that is safe for both children and pets? I'm also interested if there are any weed and feed's that are safe.

The best organic fertilizer is compost. I know some people that swear by mushroom compost, others that use worm casings. Either way, you rake in about 1/2" of the compost into the grass and it will start perking right up.
If you decide on a chemical fertilizer blend, don't get a slow release type. Water the lawn a bit before applying the fertilizer, then apply and water again. It will help the fertilizer get down into the soil where its useful, and not waste your money or be a potential snack for a curious toddler.

If you want one that's safe for children and pets then forget the ones with weed control.
First, you need to decide what combination you need - like a 15-15-40. Go to a reputable nursery and tell them what your soil is like. Also, if this is for a lawn, they'll want to know what kind of grass you plan to seed, or already have.
The alternative is if you have a nursery that has compost. Compost is pretty good for any setting. I have two composters and haven't bought fertilizer for about four years.
Before compost I used a good chicken manure - and that was pretty safe.

If you're looking for totally natural, a mix of peat moss and manure is wonderful. The bagged cow manure, not the composted stuff, is sterilized and has no objectionable odor. Cows are one of the most efficient composters on the planet. With children and pets, I'd stay away from all chemicals, because they are not necessary.
I did this a couple of years back and my yard was absolutely gorgeous. I just use a wheelbarrow and sprinkle it around with a coffee can.
Manure around here is $1.50 for 40 pounds, and you can cover a large area for little money. And you don't have to cover the ground with it either.
If you're battling dandelions, it's healthier to just eat them. They make spinach look like junk food!
