My camera will not download pictures.?

My camera is a Panasonic , when i bought it I was sold an SD 4 gig chip to use in it. I went on a trip and took allot of pictures and when I got back found that my computer would not recognize the chip. I tried to transfer pictures directly from the camera, with the included patch cord and got a message that the drive which had been indicated as the camera was empty. I then removed the chip from the camera and placed it directly into a card reader ind when I accessed the drive I got a message to insert a disk into the drive. I then placed the chip into my digital picture frame and viewed the pictures, This was kind of good but I still had no way to get the pictures into my computer. Why can not I do anything with my pictures?

Yes we formatted the card in the camera before we left that is why I was surprised it wouldn't work right

There is a new generation of SD cards called SDHC.  If it's 4GB it's very likely to be one of them.  I have a 4GB SDHC card that my computer's SD card slot does not read and similarly says to insert disk.  

Ebay continually has $1 USD or less SDHC usb card readers, including postage.  That's how I got mine.

I'm not sure though why connecting the camera with a cable didn't work.
