I can't remember who really used it first, but Ray McKinley used it back in the 1940s and he was a Jazz drummer.

Many people think metal bands used it first, but they wasn't.

The book "Hammer of the Gods" states that Jophn Bonham was banned from having a double bass pedal by the rest of the band; they felt he already played too fast.

The first big drummers who used two bass drums were Louis Bellson and Sam Woodyard, who both played with the Duke Ellington Orchestra in the ’50s and ’60s.
