In 1928 Otto Frederick Rohwedder invented the first loaf at a time bread slicer. Spurred on by his critics, he added a wrapping feature to it. In 1930 Wonder Bread was the first to sell presliced bread to the public. This idea of sliced bread increased the sales of another invention, the toaster.

the inventor was Otto Frederick Rohwedder
The phrase "the greatest thing since sliced bread" (and variations thereof) is a commonly used hyperbolic means of praising an invention or development. Sliced bread appears to be something of an arbitrary selection as the benchmark against which later inventions should be judged. It has been said that "the phrase is the ultimate depiction of innovative achievement and American know-how",[8] although it is commonly used in the United Kingdom as well.
The popular use of the phrase derives from the fact that Wonder Bread, the first mass-marketer of sliced bread as a product, launched a 1930s ad campaign touting the innovation.[9]

"Kleen Maid Sliced Bread" was the first brand that offered it.
I believe that unsliced loaves are better. They last longer and make it harder for mold to get between the slices. Id rather cut off a hunk to toss than throw away more bread than i should have to. Homemade bread for the Win!!

Wonderbread. When food was scarce, having it efficiently precut saved families on food costs. Food, and bread, was not always available too. So, you wanted to make it last.
