Don't know what OS you're using, so I'll assume Windows. It has, however, been a long time since I've used Windows for development! There's a rather nice means, though, which is to use Cygwin or MinGW. These provide a Linux-like command line environment well suited to C/C++ development.

Cygwin is great for C/C++ in Windows, if you comfortable working from a CLI (if your not, you should probably get comfy with it).
However, a lot of people prefer a more GUI-fied environment, in which case you can check out:

By the way, particularly if you choose Cygwin, you might find it useful to have another text editor around, with syntax highlighting, such as Notepad++:
